WHY I TAKE PHOTOS

I first started taking pictures to record and share my own passion for travelling, mostly taking pictures of places on my journeys.

As I grew older my family and friends became the inspiration behind my photography collecting those cherished memories of the events which make our lives a little sweeter.

The real turning point however was a change of my home environment.

I work as a fire fighter and was lucky to transfer to North Devon which has a dramatic coastline and some wonderful surfing beaches.

The next few years I submerged myself in my new surroundings by walking, cycling and surfing. Somewhere along the way I was lucky enough to capture some reasonable pictures, slowly my skills and passion for photography have increased.

The essence of photography is taking advantage of the chances you are offered. For me it is the opportunity to photograph my surrounding area and capture some of our wonderful sunsets and big swells.

Being in the right place at the right time has been a big advantage and has helped me to get established as a surf photographer.

Now I try to force the issue a little by placing myself in the best locations so I travel around the world and hope to catch the some of the international action.

When I look through the images shown in the surfing magazines, I try to imagine myself taking such wonderful photographs or maybe riding the waves. I am awe inspired by the size of the huge waves and cringing at the powerful wipe-outs.

Once I started as a professional photographer the motivation was to produce images which are stunning and provide the wow factor. It is this difficult challenge of recording something fantastic within a fleeting moment that is my motivational buzz.

I take pictures because I love taking pictures; this is something which I am very proud and honoured to share.
